The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office for Johnson County will host a four-session landowner series in Cleburne.

The series will be held from 1-4 p.m. on Oct. 10, Oct. 24, Nov. 7 and Nov. 21 at the AgriLife Extension office for Johnson County, 109 W. Chambers St. 

The cost is $10 per session, payable in cash or check at the door. To RSVP, call the AgriLife Extension office at 817-556-6370 at least one day before the session you are attending. 

About the sessions

Each session will feature three topics designed to help landowners maximize the potential of their rural properties, while also introducing land management and agriculture. 

Topics and speakers include: 

Session 1 – Oct. 10

  • How to get started gardening — Kathy Weaver, Weaver Plant Nursery.
  • Tour of Guinn Gardens — Johnson County Master Gardeners.
  • Canning and food preservation — Laura Hall, canning professional. 

Session 2 – Oct. 24

  • Pasture management 101 — Cassie Mavis, AgriLife Extension agriculture and natural resources agent, Johnson County. 
  • Cottage food laws — Andre Brooks, AgriLife Extension family and community health agent, Erath County. 
  • Panel of farmers’ market sellers. 

Session 3 – Nov. 7

  • Backyard poultry production — Greg Archer, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension poultry specialist and professor, Texas A&M Department of Poultry Science, Bryan-College Station. 
  • Homesteading — LeAnne Pollack, AgriLife Extension family and community health agent, Johnson County. 
  • Animal handling basics — Clint Calvert, DVM, Alvarado Veterinary Clinic. 

Session 4 – Nov. 21

  • County resources to know — AgriLife Extension agents.
  • Goals of land management — Chase Brooke, AgriLife Extension small acreage and wildlife management specialist, Department of Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management, Stephenville. 
  • Business planning and finances — Pollack.
